“Lost and Found”
The Missing Moment Experience is the experimental lighting design with the Royal Stupa, Chedi Luang Temple in Chiang Mai. The Royal Stupa is the biggest stupa in the northern part of Thailand which has the missing top structure due to the major earthquake in Lanna Kingdom in the past. The height of the current existing remains is about 40 meters. This experimental lighting design helps religion to meet technology and produce spectacular experiences. The laser beams are used as the important experimental tools to fulfill the top part of the existing remains by creating the light tunnel generated from the outline of the complete form of the Royal Stupa. The light tunnel thus shows the approximate proportion and height the complete image Stupa which is around 70 meters. It is worth noting that the light tunnel only shows the outline shape and leaves empty space in the middle as the incomplete image for further imagination of viewers. As a result, local Chiang Mai people and visitors could have a chance to experience the beautiful moment of the past, which disappeared from memory for almost 500 years or at least 5 generations of local people.
The initial question for this experiment is how to wake this gigantic heritage up with the similar rhythm of the current contemporary lifestyle. Experimental lighting design with laser beams are considered as great means to create new perception to local wisdom and stimulate the interest of the younger generation. In the hope that new kinds of conversation could be created between the past and the future, the old and young, religion and technology. And this could lead to the first step of how to preserve Lanna local wisdom, art and culture with new eyes of innovations.
This experiment is created by Creative Lanna Innovation Center (CLIC), the Faculty of Architecture, Chiang Mai University with great support from the Faculty of Architecture, Chiang Mai University and the National Innovation Agency (Public Organizations). This project is the collaboration between Lanna Architecture Center, College of Arts, Media and Technology, Chiang Mai University (CAMT) and CMU Creative Lanna (CL) in the name of the project called Awaken KHUM for Innovative and Creative Economy (KHUM)
This experimental lighting design “Lost and Found” will be shown every Sunday from 8 to 10 p.m. from 7th August to 25th September 2022 at the Royal Stupa, the Chedi Luang Temple, Chiang Mai.
